Yogi ran with Booboo in his arms.  The poachers were right behind them in their trucks.  He felt the cub tremble in fear and hugged him close in comfort.
The two ended up at a waterfall.
Yogi whirled around and backed up until he reached the edge.  He looked down to what could be their deaths.  He looked back at the poachers and their guns and made a split second decision.
He held Booboo’s face in his chest and jumped.  On the way down he sent up a prayer to the Great Spirits. ‘Please…protect Booboo…let him live…let my cub live!’
They hit the water and Yogi swam to the surface.  He could feel his strength leaving him and his vision begin to blur.
He hung onto a log and looked at Booboo.
Booboo looked at him and saw the fatigue.  “Yogi?  You ok?”
Yogi smiled tiredly at him.  “Am now.  You’re safe.”
Booboo’s eyes filled up at that.
“YOGI!!  BOOBOO!!”
Cindy came running.
Yogi managed to get to shore.  “Cindy…”  He hung onto a rock as he placed Booboo on it and pushed him to her.
Cindy instinctively scooped him up and shut her eyes in relief.  When she and Booboo looked back they found Yogi gone and his hat laying upside down on the rock.
The current had washed him away.
They both stood there in shocked horror for a few minutes before the grief sat in.
Cindy knelt down and picked up the hat.  Booboo took it and hugged it as if it were a security blanket.  Together they went to the Ranger Station.
Ranger Smith was out doing his rounds but Ranger Rubydoux was there.  He was holding a walkie talkie and paled when he saw them.  He gulped and told Ranger Smith to come to the station quickly.
How would he take the news that Yogi was gone?
