"You will not TOUCH him!"

Jerry looked up from his crouched position as Tom jumped in front of him protectively.  The black cat that had previously attacked him hissed and growled at Tom.

The mouse watched the catfight as the two felines clawed, bit, and scratched each other.  Jerry had never SEEN Tom be like this before except for that brief truce he, Tom and Spike had agreed to.  It reminded him of the careful balance that the three... well four including Tyke, lived in.  They fought due to natural instincts but when push came to shove and one was in danger usually, one of them would step up to the plate.

Jerry gasped as Tom was suddenly thrown to the ground and hit his head.  He didn't move!  The cat turned his head at him weakly.  "Jerry...r-run!"

A swipe across the throat and Tom was gone.

Jerry ran to the backyard as tears coursed down small furry face.  He ran towards the bulldog as the cat started gaining up on him!  "Spike! Spike!  Help!"

Spike and Tyke looked up.  He pushed his puppy in the doghouse and ran to the cat before managing to grab him!  It was then that he saw blood on the cat's claws and mouth.

Jerry collapsed on his paws and knees breathing heavily and sobbing.

It took only a nanosecond for Spike to figure it out.  "Jerry....the blood...is...is it Tom's?"

The mouse nodded.  "T-Tom protected me...he's g-gone...!"

Spike growled at the cat in his paws making him gulp!  One chomp of his powerful jaws and the cat was no more.  He tossed the carcass over the fence before shutting his eyes as anger was replaced by a deep sadness.

Jerry returned to the front yard and looked at Tom's torn up body.  The cat was lying on his back and one of his ears was bitten clean off.  His tail was broken as well as one of his shoulders.  Blood stained the gray and white fur matting it.  He shakingly walked up and clutched the cat's fur crying.  The body was still warm.

Spike approached them and felt for any signs of life.  His eyes widened and he smiled through his own tears.  "Jerry he's still alive!  Cat's have nine lives remember?  Looks like his nine lives aren't up yet!"

Jerry stared at him before climbing up and putting his small paws on the cat's chest.  He didn't expect to feel a heartbeat but he did!

Spike gently picked him up.  "He needs a vet.  You stay here and watch Tyke.  I know you want to go with him but I'm faster."

Jerry reluctantly nodded as he slid off Tom.  He took one last look at the cat before going to the backyard.

It was hours into the night before Spike returned once again carrying Tom who was now bandaged up.  He explained that Tom was hurt worse than originally feared and was told that the best care would be at home.  The dog had readily agreed.

They put Tom in his bed and the round the clock care began.  Days passed and Tom showed no signs of waking up.

It was late one night with the moon shining through the window.  Jerry sighed as he looked at Tom's face wishing to see those bright yellow eyes again.  He sighed again as he laid his small head on the cat's side and shut his eyes.  A few minutes later he was woken up when a paw was placed on his back.  He looked up expecting Spike but to his shock the paw was white...and the arm gray...

He looked up and met tired yellow eyes of the hurt cat.  "J-jerry..."

The voice was so weak but it was music to the mouse's ears!  He let a whoop of joy and hugged the cat happily.  "Oh Tom!"

The holler woke up Spike who came running.  Once he saw the cat awake he smiled in relief.  "How many lives you got left now?"

Tom grinned weakly.  "Good question."

The dog entered and went over to the bed.  "Welcome back Tom."

Tom only smiled at them before closing his eyes...this time for sleep.  He felt Jerry climb up on him and curl up on his chest.  He didn't mind one bit.

Heh besides...nobody was allowed to torment Jerry but himself!
